Beta Iota Chapter Installed, New Members Initiated After Storm of Successes

Twelve new members of Phi Beta Fraternity for the Creative and Performing Arts were initiated Saturday, April 28, and after almost a year of hard work, preparation, bonding, and waiting, Beta Iota Chapter was finally installed as the newest chapter of Phi Beta just in time for Phi Beta's Centennial exactly one week later on May 5. This tremendous accomplishment came on the heels of completing a successful Relay For Life fundraising drive as seven colony members turned out to participate in the actual Relay event at CWRU. Our final fundraising total: $555, meeting and exceeding our goal of $500!

Following these resounding successes, the brothers and sisters of the new chapter undertook a beautification project on the fourth floor of the Music & Communication building, along with initiating two more new members who brought the chapter's total numbers to fourteen brothers and sisters strong - more than a 100% increase from those first six founders of Cleveland State's Phi Beta interest group.

We are always on the lookout for more Cleveland State students who are active in the creative and performing arts, so if that sounds like a perfect description of you, we'd love to meet you! If you're a CSU student with a cumulative CSU undergrad GPA of 2.5 or higher or a cumulative graduate GPA of 3.0 or higher who is active in any area of the arts, and you'd like to pursue membership in our fraternity, or  if you have any questions about us that aren't answered by our site, please feel free to contact us!

Recent Activities

Spring 2012 combined arts, service, and fun for Cleveland State's Phi Betas as we spent the entire semester working toward a single major philanthropic goal: Raising $500 for the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life. To that end, we sold baked goods and feather roses, donated out of our own pockets, asked family and friends to donate, and partnered with East Cleveland Theater and Players' Patchwork Theatre Company in a massive undertaking - what is now to be the chapter's first annual benefit spaghetti dinner and variety show!

The arts also received plenty of attention in the areas of both performance and support. In groups large and small, we attended a photography exhibition at the Old Stone Church, enjoyed a concert at Severance Hall, and supported our members as they participated in choir concerts,  instrumental concerts and theatrical performances throughout the semester. Perhaps most significantly, our members came together as a group to show off our artistry and talents to each other on one great night in our first Probationary Member Recital and Exhibition - and since all but one of us were probationary members, a tremendous variety of talents got a chance to shine! Short stories and poems were read; songs were sung; drawings, photographs and digital art were displayed. One member, who had planned to read two poems which were unfortunately eaten by technology, gave us all the surprise of the evening by challenging us to give him two topics - and then improvising and declaiming one poem on each topic, on the spot!

Perhaps our greatest accomplishment this semester, however, was that of finally becoming not Beta Iota Colony but Beta Iota Chapter  - only a week before Phi Beta Fraternity's Centennial Anniversary! Eleven Probationary Members were initiated as Phi Beta brothers and sisters, bringing our total ranks to twelve and doubling our numbers in just under a year. We then followed this up by initiating two more into Phi Beta's ranks only a few weeks later, bringing our total numbers to fourteen to wrap up the year.

And coming soon...
